Sani Pass Community Outreach
Vela VKE in a joint venture partnership with Ndizani Civil Works is undertaking the design and construction supervision of Phase 1 of the Sani Pass Road Project in Kwa-Zulu Natal. In order to facilitate and promote the training and employment of local labour on the project, a Training Task Team was established which comprises members from the Vela VKE / Ndizani JV, Kwa SaniMunicipality, Department of Labour, Construction Resource Development Centre (accredited training provider) and representatives from the six local communities.
As a community outreach initiative and to promote maths and science in schools, Vela VKE sponsored maths kits to schools in the vicinity. On 1st February 2008, these kits were handed out to pupils from the Kwamvimbela High School and Enhlanhleni Combined School. A total of 70 maths kits, each comprising of a pencil, ruler, mathematical instrument set and scientific calculator, were handed out to the top performing pupils from grade 10 to grade 12. Pupils and educators were very grateful for the donations as they could not afford to purchase the equipment themselves.
As a follow up to the maths kits sponsorship, a site visit to the project was arranged for 15 pupils from Kwamvimbela High School on 5th March 2008. Pupils were given a presentation promoting civil engineering as a career and then taken on a site tour to visit different construction activities. Vela VKE also sponsored 3 clothing gift vouchers which were given to pupils answering correctly to an impromptu quiz held at the end of the site visit. A similar site visit for pupils from Enhlanhleni Combined School is being planned.
